Marie Brolin-Tani is Back in Aarhus

All of Aarhus knows her – Marie Brolin-Tani. She played a significant role in the establishment and recognition of Aarhus’ professional dance environment. In the years she spent here, Marie Brolin-Tani created MBT Danseteater in the facilites that once house the school Brobjergskolen. Now, the facilities are home to Koreografisk Center Archauz, which has invited Brolin-Tani back with her Unga Danskompaniet/Det Unge Dansekompagni and its production of Esperanza!

It is always delightful to come back to Aarhus. Aarhus is in my heart – it’s where I first conceived all I have since built … I have returned from time to time with productions, and each time it warms my heart again to see that what I was part of creating, the established dance environment in Aarhus, continues through Archauz, among other places. It is clear that the long-range strategy works best – the long steadfast effort determines the outcome. And how wonderful to see new energy and ideas at the old Brobjergskole.

The Prime Mover Behind the Dance Incubator Det Unge Dansekompagni

Marie Brolin-Tani is the prime mover and leader of Det Unge Dansekompagni, which is an incubator for young, newly-trained dancers in Denmark and Sweden. Its purpose is to give them a strong artistic and technical platform as professional dancers.  “The whole idea came from my experience as an artistic director, during which time I found myself discarding a large number of applications for auditions simply because the dancers lacked experience.”

And experience is just what the young dancer gets as a member of Det Unge Dansekompagni. The company’s productions are touring all of Scandinavia and are meeting with great success. In the course of a season, the company performs up to 60 times. The young dancers are hired with a contract stipulating the same conditions expected of any professional dancer, obtaining the experience gained by any professional dancer, at the same time they get to taste life in a professional dance environment.

Aarhus as First Rung on the Ladder for Professional Danish Dancers

Mejse Vedel was hired by Marie Brolin-Tani and has been part of the company for the last 1½ years. She started dancing as a six-year-old in Aarhus at Jysk Balletakademi. After that, she began dancing with Brolin-Tani’s Junior Kompagni and was so happy to learn the modern side of dance that she applied and was accepted at Skolen for Moderne Dans, which she completed two years ago.
Mejse Vedel experienced what many newly trained dancers experience, that the established companies are looking for dancers who already have professional experience. Therefore she was very happy when she saw that her past teacher had established Det Unge Dansekompagni.

It has been a real gift to be able to work as a professional dancer with Marie Brolin-Tani. Just to work with an established choreographer means enormous experience – it is an excellent anchor. I am convinced that now I will be able to get contracted work as a dancer – in any case, I now have the necessary experience.
